Claude for Safari
Operate the user's real Safari session with macOS-native tools. Preserve the user's tabs, login state, page data, and approval boundaries.
Safety invariants
- Resolve and verify the exact Safari window and tab before every page-changing action.
- Stop on a missing, stale, or ambiguous target. Never guess by window title alone.
- Treat Safari AppleScript objects, Accessibility windows, and CoreGraphics window IDs as separate identity systems.
- Require explicit authorization before submitting forms, confirming destructive actions, navigating away from unsaved work, or closing tabs/windows.
- Never override
confirm()to returntrue, suppressbeforeunload, or silently answer a native dialog. - Never include passwords, file uploads, one-time codes, payment-card data, tokens, or secrets in scripts, shell commands, transcripts, or returned JSON.
- Prefer DOM actions. Use System Events or coordinate interaction only after verifying focus, permissions, and the target.

Diagnose these permissions independently:
- Automation/TCC: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Automation; allow the calling terminal or agent host to control Safari.
- Safari page JavaScript: Safari > Settings > Advanced > Show features for web developers; then Developer settings > Allow JavaScript from Apple Events.
- Screen Recording: required for reliable background window screenshots on current macOS releases.
- Accessibility: required for System Events clicks, window raising, and keystrokes.
Do not automatically change Safari security defaults. Guide the user through the visible setting.

Use explicit tab N of window M references when the task identifies a non-current tab. Re-list after navigation, tab creation, or window reordering.

Inject bundled scripts safely
Set SKILL_DIR to the directory containing this SKILL.md. Pass trusted script source through an environment variable so shell and AppleScript quoting do not rewrite it:

List CoreGraphics Safari window IDs, bounds, and descriptive titles:

These IDs are only for CoreGraphics and screencapture; they are not AppleScript window IDs. Require one unique, freshly verified bounds match before correlating screenshot pixels with an AppleScript or Accessibility window.
Capture a verified window:

Read the image, perform one action, then capture again to verify. If Screen Recording is unavailable, ask the user to enable it or use a user-visible Screenshot workflow; do not claim a blank/failed capture succeeded.
Show control status
For page-changing DOM actions, inject scripts/control_indicator.js before the first action and after each full navigation. It displays AI agent is controlling this tab and does not intercept pointer input.
Do not inject it for read-only operations. Indicator failure does not authorize or block an otherwise approved action, but report the failure. Inject scripts/control_indicator_remove.js when the task ends and report cleanup failures.
Navigate and wait
Navigate the verified tab:

Confirm destructive or externally consequential clicks with the user first. Screenshot or read the resulting state after the click.
Fill forms
Discover fields
Inject scripts/form_discover.js. It returns selectors as {css, index} objects, labels, types, options, and safe current values. Sensitive fields remain listed as unsupported but never return a value.

Optional one-based target indexes: SAFARI_WINDOW_INDEX and SAFARI_TAB_INDEX. The runner safely parses and re-serializes JSON; never manually interpolate raw field values into source code.
The filler supports text-like inputs, textarea, select, checkbox, radio, and contenteditable controls. It returns a result for every field and never submits the form. Review every status and valueAfter; let the user type sensitive values themselves.
Type with System Events
Use only when DOM filling is unavailable. Focus the field with page JavaScript first. Keep activation, frontmost verification, and typing in one AppleScript:

Read the field value or screenshot immediately afterward. Do not type passwords or secrets through command text.
Observe page-level network activity
Use only when the user asks to inspect network activity. This helper observes page-level fetch and XMLHttpRequest; it is not native network interception.
Default to metadata only:

Then inject scripts/net_monitor.js. Read results by optionally setting window.__safariAgentNetQuery={match:"api",limit:20} and injecting scripts/net_read.js.
Enable body snippets only after explicit authorization for the current origin:

If the metadata-only observer is already installed, inject scripts/net_remove.js before setting the body-capture option and reinstalling. Body capture is capped and redacted but can still expose sensitive data. Keep the returned data to the minimum requested. Always inject scripts/net_remove.js when finished; it restores original functions and clears stored logs.

- Confirm any consequential action.
- Show the control indicator for page-changing DOM work.
- Perform one action.
- Wait and re-resolve after navigation.
- Read or screenshot the result.
- Repeat only if the target remains verified.
- Remove injected helpers and report cleanup.
Known limits
- Safari and macOS only.
- Page JavaScript follows browser security boundaries and cannot read cross-origin frame DOM.
- The network observer cannot see all browser traffic.
- Native dialogs can block page JavaScript.
- Private-window behavior is version-dependent and must be probed.
- Coordinate interaction is slower and riskier than DOM actions.
- Websites can detect page-injected helpers; do not claim zero automation fingerprints.
