Comp Desk
The ratio does not set the gain reduction - the overshoot does. GR is (input minus threshold) times (1 - 1/R), and that second term is capped at 1, so at 2 dB over the threshold even an infinite ratio removes 2 dB. At 10 dB over, climbing from 4:1 to 10:1 buys 1.50 dB and the whole rest of the dial is worth 2.50, while 3 dB of threshold buys 2.25 and keeps buying it. Ratios multiply in series, a soft knee starts half its width early, and a stage behind another stage can do nothing at all. Five lanes over one sheet, plus a free browser-side engine that computes every stage in order.
